I was introduced to the project, 'Making Generation R' by a good friend (and past student) of mine. Created by the charity, Blesma, the project takes military veterans into schools to share their stories with young people and their experiences with physical and mental health. The aim is to encourage young people to talk more openly about their own mental health, without shame or stigma, and to consider ways in which we can develop resilience in the face of adversity.
Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the project has shifted its work onto a virtual platform and I was given the opportunity to share it with my students. The veterans' stories are honest, beautifully told and carry a powerful message that even when faced with the most appalling, life changing injuries, we can learn to be stronger and more resilient.
You can find my review of the virtual teaching resource in Kirstie Chambers' article at -https://www.forces.net/news/coronavirus-veterans-virtually-share-mental-health-experiences-students
